I can remember well though that when I started researching into romantic fiction many people in broadcasting, journalism, libraries and amongst my own colleagues were amazed that I should find anything at all interesting in this section of the book world. Particularly amongst women in broadcasting and journalism there was often a spitefulness about these books. I remember one lady interviewer once saying to me "But surely you can't claim that 'these books' are read by a normal cross-section of women. None of my friends ever read them." When I suggested that perhaps her friends were not a normal cross-section of the female population she got quite huffy. (13)

Over the period of time I have known romantic fiction it has changed quite a lot and this change has mirrored the changing mores of Western society. (15)
