Here's the abstract:

Romance novels currently account for between 40 and 46 percent of popular books sold in America. They attract a predominately female audience, which has evolved from a stereotypical housewife to include professional, educated women. Women choose these novels to provide a pleasurable escape from reality, psychological dependence, increased accessibility and convenience, and increased leisure time. Women read romance novels for similar reasons, regardless of education level. A formula for writing romances does not exist based on various types of novels available and the means with which authors present their elements.
