Although I began the study worried about the romanticization of abuse in popular cultural texts and about how to counsel abused women when they are engaged with such romantic representations of abusive heterosexual relationships, I moved to what could be considered a less “pathologizing” position in which I imagined that the women were actively resisting despair through their choice of texts.
