Griswold's analysis of Nigerian romance literature is definitely set within a comparative point of view. Indeed Griswold goes beyond sociological comparison, in that she is directly concerned with the ways in which comparison is done by agents. Specifically, she regards Nigerian writers of romantic fiction as agents of "elective affinity" or "structured syncretism" in relation to a novel-writing formula which comes from the outside but which is implemented in a particular sociocultural context.
