Este capítulo hace un repaso por la historia de la novela romántica, también conocida en español como novela rosa, y su evolución como género en Gran Bretaña y en los Estados Unidos. Su principal objetivo es dar a conocer el carácter político que rodea a estas novelas, y cómo se han utilizado a lo largo del tiempo para reivindicar una mayor igualdad social, ya sea en términos de género, sexualidad, o raza. Además de esto, este capítulo ofrece un análisis del estado actual del género dentro del mercado editorial, así como de los temas más controvertidos que rodean a este tipo de novelas en la actualidad. Por último, también se describen los estudios en este campo dentro del mundo académico, y se abordan las perspectivas que se vislumbran para su futuro desarrollo como género y como área de investigación.

This chapter nicely frames the rest of the volume with its succinct but informative discussion of the history and cultural impact of romance novels and its overview of the main critical waves of romance criticism. The chapter concludes with a brief reflection on the future of popular romance, particularly in what concerns current moves to incorporate more diverse voices and inclusive perspectives, leaving behind the whiteness that has historically characterised the genre.
