This essay uses genre theory to examine the way genre is used in contemporary romance when the element of magic, from the fantasy genre, is added. The subjects of the examination are two contemporary romance novels that feature magical elements: Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez and The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston. The purpose of the study is to show how genre is used in the two works and discuss how the addition of the fantastical elements affects the use of the romance genre. The works are compared to Brian Atteberys genre concepts formula and mode as tools that are applied to his own definitions of fantasy and Pamela Regis definitions of romance. The conclusion of the study is that while the romance genres formula remains relatively unchanged, the mode must change to make room for the magical elements since they are supernatural. The genres come together in an unproportional mix, where the works resemble the formula and mode of romance more than the formula and mode of fantasy. At their core, the works remain focused around the development of a romantic relationship between the main characters.
