There isn't a lot about romance since the article discusses many genres, including romance. However, the findings may be of interest: "romance novels are described as ‘genre fiction’ and therefore, as losing their chance to be perceived as literary" and "Lauded literary novels by Dutch female authors receive relatively low ratings and are more readily compared to Mills and Boons novels or ‘women’s novels’ than works by male authors in the motivations."
