Popular romances require as much thought and care in selection as any other type of library material. However, traditional review sources ignore this genre. In order to engage in thoughtful selection, the librarian must turn to sources that specialize in information on popular romances. After defining "popular romance" and detailing its sub-genres, this paper describes the major types of selection tools for popular romances and discusses the most useful examples of each type: current review sources, sources for older titles, author sources, category sources, and miscellaneous sources. With the aid of these sources, thoughtful and effective selection of popular romances can be done.
