In this article we focus on the discursive functions assumed in context by the phraseological motif regarder par la fenêtre. This motif is specific to contemporary French-language novels which belong to general fiction and romance novels within the corpus of the ANR-DFG PhraseoRom project. In addition, we analyse the discursive functions of the motif and the margins of overlap and/or distinction between the two sub-genres under study.
