Romance is a notoriously slippery category. Critics disagree about whether it is a genre or a mode, about its origins and history, even about what it encompasses. Yet, paradoxically, readers are often able to identify romance almost tacitly: they know it when they see it. [...]

This volume charts the multiple, protean transformations of romance throughout literary history. Instead of settling on a single definition in the hope of capturing romance in its original shape, it demonstrates how different conceptions of the term emerge dynamically, in opposition  to other types of literary production. Fuchs does discuss modern popular romance, but only in the final section of the book, "Romance and 'Genre Literature'," pages 124-130. A review of the book by Amy Burge was published in the Journal of Popular Romance Studies.
