Parallels with the reception of the modern romance novel aren't drawn out, but they'll be obvious to romance scholars. For example, "The romance, the last new genre produced by classical antiquity, has had a bad press" (23) and "it is based on folktale material, written by obscure authors and scorned by the literary establishment, but it has a wide readership" (33).
