(Dis)Pleasures of Domineering Love: A Comparative Study of Chinese Bazong and English Alpha Billionaire Romance Novels and Cross-Cultural Reader Reception
Chapter 8 (Yansha He) examines the transnational circulation of CEO romance through a comparative analysis of Chinese bazong [...] and Western Alpha Billionaire subgenres, focusing on two representative novels, Shanshan Comes to Eat ([...], 2011) and Fifty Shades of Grey (2011). The emergence and popularity of both novels are inseparable from contemporary digital publishing platforms: the former was originally serialised on Jinjiang, while the latter was originally self-published. This chapter argues that as shuang/pleasure narratives, these novels function as two-layer fantasies, both compensatory (acknowledging but indulging in patriarchal dynamics), and reconciling (navigating contradictory desires for empowerment and submission). Through textual analysis and cross-cultural reader reception analysis, this chapter demonstrates how these parallel subgenres embody divergent postfeminist tensions in their respective cultural contexts yet generate structured ambivalent pleasure with worldwide appeal.
