Lepschy says she will "concentrate on Carolina Invernizio (1851-1916), Annie Vivanti (1868-1942) and Liala (Amaliana Cambiasi Negretti Odescalchi, 1897-1995)", and that "Carolina Invernizio may be seen as an exponent of the romanzo d'appendice (more violent, dramatic and adventurous), Liala of the romanzo rosa (more sentimental and directed towards a happy ending), whilst Annie Vivanti is considered a notch higher (belonging to an Italian canon which neglects Invernizio and Liala), although she too is seen as the creator of romanzi popolari" (177).
