Mariia Cherniak, writing on "Romantic Fiction," documents the ways in which an initially "imported" genre (151) of Latin American soap operas and translated Mills and Boon novels developed within five years into a homegrown "testing ground of new female identity" (159). Cherniak interprets the "reflexive" (163) function of romance for both writers and consumers-who are almost exclusively women-in light of the continued absence of a feminine domain in the Russian public sphere.
