Mills & Boon romance novels that are read by these young Indian women thus existed on a continuum of reading choices and reading tastes that were shaped by their preferences for English-language series books as children. The lending libraries where Mills & Boon romances are available for borrowing are the same libraries that many young women visited as children with their parents and older siblings to check out their favorite childhood books. My discussions with informants, librarians, selected teachers, and some parents also showed that Mills & Boon romance novels are viewed as resources to improve English language skills. Some informants claimed that reading Mills & Boon romance novels allowed them to combine relaxation with a useful learning experience. (92)
