Allen, in her chapter in The Routledge Research Companion to Popular Romance Fiction, states that: "While Cart’s focus is on YA literature generally, the large role that romance has played within that literature means that part of Cart’s text also acts as a short history of YA romance" (177). After discussing older YA romances, more recent ones are discussed in Chapter Four "The Eighties - The Pendulum Swings: The Rise of the Paperback Romance."
Allan adds that:
Twenty years after its first publication, Cart’s text is now in its third edition (2016), having undergone a title change to Young Adult Literature: From Romance to Realism. The demotion of the original title to subtitle is paralleled by the downgrading of romance within the text: Part I retains the first four chapters of the 1996 edition (with its focus on romance in the 1940s–50s and 1980s), but the other two-thirds of the text focus on new forms, themes, and controversies, and the focus on romance is noticeably lessened. The current edition therefore remains important within the field of YA generally, but less so for YA romance studies. (178)
