This article examines the different steps of romance writing. Writing romance novels is not only based on a generic code but depends also on editorial guidelines, on the authors and their conception of the genre described in guides to writing romantic fiction, and on its adaptation to French speakers by translators and rewriters. These successive steps explain the specificities of the genre and, the publishers and authors’ conceptions of romance novels from English to French.
