Contemporary Indonesian literature is packed with stories written by Indonesian Muslim writers reflecting stories of love and relationships intertwined with the search for God. Such stories are often categorized as Indonesian Islamic popular novels.
This article aims to discuss Indonesian Islamic urban pop fiction written by Muslim women writers to see the ways female characters negotiate and balance the conflict between piety and profanity: practising religion and living stylish lives. Islamic pop novels seem to represent a new Indonesian Islamic youth culture that is more open to modernity, globalization, and pop culture.
