Harlequin Presents: That '70s Shakespeare and Beyond

Publication year

I track the ebb and flow of Shakespearean references in the context of the development of series romances through the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. Harlequin's complex publishing history provides the context for surprisingly various elaborations on Shakespeare's plays and characters. I argue that the significance of Shakespearean references within series romance is crucially tied to its generic development, particularly to the emergence of subgenres. (129)

Non-Harlequin "trad Regency" romances are also discussed.
