There are three major subgenres of Japanese romance category fiction: 1) hyper-serious novels, ending in hiren 'blighted love'; 2) light or ironic novels with a happî-endo 'happy ending'; and 3) translations of Harlequin-type western romance novels. This analysis concentrates on the latter two subtypes. (133)
