Fletcher states that

Different versions of some material in Chapters 3, 5 and 7 have been previously published. An earlier version of Chapter 3 was published as "'Mere Costumery'? Georgette Heyer's Cross-Dressing Novels" [...] Parts of Chapters 5 and & 7 were originally published in my article "Historical Romance Fiction and Heterosexuality: John Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman and A. S. Byatt's Possession" in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies, 7.1&2, 2003'" (vii).
